I am David

1. The abstract: David got separated from his family and imprison in the labor camp. There is one adult named John who helped him much. One day, someone (I thought it is John in the beginning, but I was wrong when storey moves on) tried to help him escape from the camp. Someone gave him one sealed envelope and order him not to open it until arrive in Denmark and trust no one on the way. Then, the story begins……………….
2. David never begs for help. For example, he didn’t beg for not reporting his existence on the ship, and for free loaf.
3. the boy wants to escape from the labor camps no matter how dangerous it is because they (the authorities) will kill him anyway. And David wanted to do whatever he could do to stay alive. While David proposed this escaping plane, John (sort of mentor to him) was hesitated. Perhaps John was scared to risk or make any changes.
4. What happenings to David in the labor camp like the shadows keep following his steps, on every circumstance he encounters on the way to Denmark, and every people he meets.
5. Once he saved a girl bounded on the chair from the fired house, the girl’s family treated him well as in return. While having a bath, he noticed the soap near the bathtub and wanted to have it without permission. This behavior makes him recall that he once stole one soap from the higher rank officer and John took it and bore the penalty to cover him. The penalty was the shooting.
6. Perhaps the idea of wanting to steal the soap recalled him the bad memory on him and the bad things happened to John. David then chose to leave the Maria and her family in order not to make further troubles to them.
7. The boy encountered the sailor, Roberto, who didn’t sell him out on the ship. Roberto said he was fired because of stealing a box of tomatoes. On this encounter, he drove David to Milan.
8. Then David happened to see one old lady painting near the lake, and the painter wanted to make a portrait of him because of his own particular face. She told him that he has serious eyes and face, and she couldn’t catch the deep expression revealed from his eyes. After then, the painter drove him to Switzerland on her way home.
9. David couldn’t cross the border because he didn’t have the paper. The old lady, Mrs. Anderson, tried to pretend David as her grandson, but the border officer didn’t believer it because they must knew each other for a long time. On the circumstances like that, Mrs. Anderson said “ all right all right, he is coming to our country and overthrow our government.” The officer considered a while and decided to let him pass and said “ see if you can get us pay raises while you are taking over our country”. It is interesting to show off their humors while being in troubles.
10. It is touching when Mrs. Anderson asked him to stay one night. At the beginning, David rejected her asking because he was not easy to trust anybody from former experiences. He said he would like to say everything to her but he can’t. Can’t say without any reasons. “ You don’t have to saying anything to me, all I want you to know is it is a safe place for you. I won’t let any guards take you away from me or even anybody”, She said. I thought there might be something changed in his heart because he then chose to stay. On the bed time, her kiss goodnight let David remember his mother once again. And for me, the views make me recall the life and mood being in Switzerland once more.
11. Until now, I just know that higher rank officer, instead of John, was the one trying to make David out of the labor camp. It is such a reversal to me!!
12. There is one book that appears from time to time, and at the last stage, it is the book written by David’s mother who lives in Denmark now. His mother was helped by her friend, just the higher rank officer in David’s camp, and escaped to Denmark. That’s why the officer asked David went ahead straight to Denmark.
13. For me, this film is full of connections, from one people to another, one eye-contact to former events, one behavior to horrible memory, one soap to the sacrifices of a friend, one shooting to the wake of consciousness.
